Hilarious High School Drummers WIN Florida Talent Show after Rick Rolling Entire Audience
Back in 2011, five student drummers from Lake Howell High School in Florida delivered one of the most impressive school talent performances ever witnessed at The Music Man. Their three-minute routine combined non-stop drum beats, Rick Rolling, and funny comedy bits with perfect rhythm. The five boys—Nigel, Dylan, Matt, Elias, and Jordan—walked onto the stage wearing kilts and carrying snare drums. From their first stick-on-side beat, the audience knew they were watching something special.
Their side-stick display included visual tricks, from tapping drum sides to flipping sticks to use the base end, creating horse galloping sounds while the crowd watched silently.
When they hit their main rhythms, their quick beats sounded like rapid gunfire as the audience cheered for their rhythmic chaos. Amazingly, they created this complex and entertaining routine in under a week!
Comedy bits enhanced the performance. The drummers moved one by one into a snare roll, but when the last drummer missed his timing, he received a kick to get back in rhythm. Simple dance moves like looking from side to side and leg lifts grew into the five drummers running circles around their instruments while keeping perfect time.
With so much percussion filling the stage, the boys paused the near-noise for solo performances as outstanding as their group work. One drummer switched effortlessly between both ends of his sticks while playing a marching beat, as his four friends struck poses before joining a second round of side-stick choreography.
The range of beats excited the crowd, but when the drummers stopped playing to sing Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" chorus, they connected with everyone's funny bone. One performer even broke the rhythm pattern by shouting, "Awh I lost the game!" causing loud laughter. 2011 was indeed a simpler time.
The middle drummer got his spotlight moment—catching sticks in mid-air, playing while crouching beside the drum, balancing a stick on his face while keeping time with another stick. Call-and-response sections ended with drummers reaching to tap each other's drums.
To finish their amazing performance, the boys used their kilts to moon the audience (thankfully they wore underwear, unlike true Scots!). This clip remains a favorite at The Music Man, and it's clear why these drummers won the talent show and gained over 29.6 million YouTube views!
