They look inconspicuous, seem shy – until they raise their voices and knock everyone off their chairs! There is more to these ten casting show applicants than meets the eye.

Saturday night and nothing better to do than watch a talent show? What may at first glance seem depressing can turn out to be an absolute highlight – provided that the candidates include gems like 13-year-old Courtney, who is currently the talk of the town. She made her big appearance on “America's Got Talent” last week and has been the talk of the town ever since, because no one would have expected such a powerful voice from the shy girl. And it wasn't just Courtney who was underestimated at first; other candidates also had to win over the audience first.

1. Courtney Hadwin – America's Got Talent

She is the star of the moment. The only 13-year-old Courtney from the UK entered the stage of “America's Got Talent” shy and reserved, her eyes downcast, it seemed as if she would have liked to hide behind her long hair. The jury doesn't seem to expect much... until Courtney gets started. And she doesn't just present any song, no, she goes all out with Otis Redding's “Hard to Handle” – and the audience goes wild with her. Because as soon as the music starts, the shy little girl turns into an impressive entertainer!

2. Susan Boyle – Britain's Got Talent

2009 was her year. The Scotswoman sang the world hit “I Dreamed a Dream” from the musical “Les Misérables”. She came in second and has since released several albums. Susan was bullied for her appearance. It was only after her breakthrough that Susan Boyle was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome and an above-average intelligence.

3. Paul Potts – Britain's Got Talent

The British are in luck, because they were also able to marvel at Paul Pott. He took part in the casting show in 2007. The unassuming, somewhat stocky Paul brought tears to the eyes of the audience with his performance of “Nessun dorma” from Puccini's opera Turandot. He is now a full-time tenor and has already sold 3.5 million records in Germany alone.

4. Cristina Scuccia – The Voice Italy

What did and Whoopi Goldberg teach us in Sister Act? That nuns can have a hell of a lot of rhythm in their blood! Cristina Scuccia proved on “The Voice of Italy” that this is not only the case in films, and thrilled the audience with her rousing performances. Also eye-catching: her fellow nuns in the audience, who were obviously proud of their sister Cristina. All that hard work paid off, and Cristina Succia won the show!

5. Paddy Jones – Britain's Got Talent

Dancing keeps you young! Paddy Jones, who was 79 years old at the time of the performance, is proof of that. She and her young dance partner (Paddy couldn't find a partner of the same age with the same verve) made their big appearance on Britain's Got Talent. Their performance didn't start out particularly spectacularly; the tango performance seemed to bore the audience and the jury alike. But suddenly the music changed, the tango became salsa and Paddy Jones showed that you can still have a lot of swing in your hips at almost 80.

6. John Hetlinger – America's Got Talent

Could Paddy Jones take a fancy to sprightly 82-year-old John? Probably his favorite music genre would be too extreme for him, although the good man would bring a lot of energy. John Hetlinger entered the stage of “America's Got Talent” in 2016. He wanted to serenade, of course. But what happened next, no one expected. Because metal grandpa John provided a lot of voices and mood with the track “Bodies” by Drowning Pool. The audience was literally swept off their feet by so much power! John was not selected for the next round, but Drowning Pool took notice of him and arranged a joint performance in which singer Jason Moreno was happy to take a back seat and let John go first on his favorite track. It's not age but vocal power that counts...

7. Bars and Melody – Britain’s Got Talent

The viewers of “Britain's Got Talent” were amazed when 15-year-old Charlie Lenehan and 13-year-old Leonore Devries took the stage. The two of them form the unbeatable duo Bars and Melody. While Charlie sings with his angelic voice, the younger Leonore raps about his school frustrations and experiences with bullying. They came in third in the show and have since released their third album.

8. Jenny Darren – Britain’s Got Talent

She took the stage as a grandmother – and left it as a rock star. Jenny Darren proved at the age of 68 that it's never too late for short skirts, leather and AC/DC. Hell yeah!

9. Georgia Loiu – The Voice of Germany

The twist in “The Voice of Germany”? The jury only sees the singers when they press the buzzer and their chair turns around. But music student Georgia Loiu tricked both the jury and the audience by staying behind her curtain for the entire performance. Her appearance? Unimportant.

10. Kyle Tomlinson – Britain’s Got Talent

The unassuming 15-year-old boy looks more like Harry Potter's unloved cousin Dudley than a gifted singer. He already tried his luck at a casting show at the age of twelve, but the jury rejected him. Three years later, he tried again with the hit “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen and took the audience and jury by storm!
