Jewel shocks fans by slaying undercover karaoke sesh in dive bar
Pop sensation Jewel, accustomed to performing in large stadiums, recently enjoyed an undercover karaoke experience at a small dive bar. Comedy website Funny or Die arranged for the star to sing her own hits while disguised as an ordinary businesswoman to see if patrons would recognize her voice.
The disguise team went to great lengths, equipping Jewel with a wig, thick glasses, a large fake nose, and a special suit that gave her an enhanced posterior. Jewel joined a group of middle-aged businessmen who set up the prank by urging their "colleague" named "Karen" to perform. The bar crowd enthusiastically cheered for "Karen" to take the stage, unaware of the surprise awaiting them.
Initially, "Karen" appeared reluctant, but when she began singing "Who Will Save Your Soul," her distinctive country-pop voice emerged, leaving audience members visibly stunned with mouths agape. The impressed crowd requested an encore, and Jewel, still in disguise, performed her hit "Foolish Games," which prompted everyone to wave their arms and join in singing.
The audience gave "Karen" thunderous applause, still believing she was simply a businesswoman with extraordinary vocal talent. After exiting briefly to remove her disguise, Jewel returned as herself and performed "You Were Meant For Me," which sparked an energetic singalong from the excited crowd.
Reflecting on the experience, Jewel said, "The whole bar was singing along. I wrote that song when I was 18 and here we are years later and the whole bar and karaoke kids are all singing it. Everybody knew all the words – it was really sweet."
One bar patron remarked, "At first when I saw her sitting I thought you know she's kinda homely looking, but then when she started singing, she was so sexy with how she danced." He noted it was the first time any performer received an encore at the venue. The man admitted thinking "Karen" sang better than Jewel before learning they were the same person, calling the prank "genius."
Online viewers also enjoyed the video, with comments noting that Jewel was the perfect artist for this type of stunt.
The musical sensation executed performances in numerous small coffee shops prior to achieving fame, so this setting likely felt familiar to her. Fans commented, "She sings without Auto-Tune or lip syncing... her live voice matches her album recordings perfectly. She probably enjoyed the experience as much as the audience did."
